Dr. Xiaoli Chen, Ph.D., L.Ac.

Xiaoli Chen, experienced practitioner of classical Chinese medicine, is a diplomate of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbology. Dr. Chen’s practice is, for her, a calling: “Using Chinese medicine to heal wounds, treat illness, and prevent diseases is my holy mission.

My intention is to always practice with a kind heart.” With more than 28 years of clinical experience in China and the United States, Dr. Chen treats a wide range of conditions. Although her extensive experience includes far more conditions, Dr. Chen is particularly interested in the following areas:

Women’s Health: dysmenorrhea, PMS, irregular menstruation, infertility, menopause, sleep disorders
Pain Management: sports injuries, acute or chronic pain, arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, neuromuscular disorders
Cancer Care: adjunctive therapy, side effects of conventional treatment
Dermatology (skin diseases)
Mental and Emotional Conditions: depression, anxiety
Other: digestive disorders, allergies, fatigue

Dr. Chen specializes in classical Chinese acupuncture, moxibustion, acupressure, cupping therapy, herbal medicine, qigong, Chinese massage, dietary therapy, and lifestyle counseling. She utilizes a variety of healing modalities to address both symptoms and root causes of illnesses, and to restore the free flow of qi (vital energy). All Dr. Chen’s treatments are meant to restore balance to the body.

Dr. Chen became interested in classical Chinese medicine’s holistic treatment approach because it focuses on the uniqueness of each individual’s condition. She studied and taught at China’s Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)—one of the top five academic institutes of TCM in China—where she received three degrees: Bachelor of Medicine, Chinese Medicine, in 1983; Master of Medicine, Acupuncture, in 1987; and Doctor of Medicine, Acupuncture, in 1994. She also was an associate professor and vice-chief physician at Chengdu University of TCM.

As an assistant professor of classical Chinese medicine at the National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) in Portland, Oregon, Dr. Chen currently teaches Acupuncture and Moxibustion Theory, Acupuncture and Moxibustion Techniques, and Clinical Case Presentation. She supervises clinical observation and internship, along with mentoring in the Traditional Mentorship Tutorial. Dr. Chen has worked at NCNM since 2002.

Additionally, Dr. Chen has published three books: Chinese-English Clinical Moxibustion, Experimental Acupuncture Science, and Acupuncture and Immunology. She has published extensively in professional journals, and she has won several awards for excellence for her doctoral thesis: the effects of small-corn moxibustion on cellular immunity in rats with rheumatoid arthritis. As a chief researcher, she has participated in several studies, including a case series on depression associated with menopause (2003-2005). Dr. Chen is currently involved in a study of the effects of adjunctive acupuncture in the treatment of spasmodic dysphonia (a voice disorder).

When she is not practicing, teaching, or researching Chinese medicine, Dr. Chen enjoys practicing taiji and qigong, hiking, gardening, and cooking traditional Chinese foods.
