Midwifery is the timeless art of assisting a woman through childbirth. Both female and male midwifery practitioners are called “midwives,” literally meaning, “with woman.” In the modern context, a midwife is an expert in women’s health care, helping promote natural, healthy birth experiences from conception through postpartum. Midwives offer care to both mother and infant. They are trained to address potential problems during pregnancy and birth using non-invasive techniques, always striving to honor a woman’s natural birth process by not intervening unless necessary. This professional ethic contrasts that of obstetricians, whose training in disease specialization and surgery guides them to “actively manage” labor. A midwife will refer a woman to an obstetrician if she requires emergency measures.
